Secondhand Smoke Isn't As Bad As They Say

Early this morning while I was getting ready for work I turned on the TV and was tuned into MAXXX, where they were showing Penn & Teller's Bullshit, a TV show that puts the spotlight on bogus stuff. On this particular show they talked about second-hand smoke, and as it turns out secondhand smoke is not nearly as dangerous as we were lead to believe. A federal court lambasted the EPA for the report that almost everyone uses to justify smoking bans (In 1993, EPA released a study ranking passive smoking at the top of its carcinogen pecking order), saying they cherry-picked data and basically just did what they had to do to come up with the results they wanted. Also, they got scientist after scientist to come on and say that there really isn't any good data linking second-hand smoke to increased cancer risks. According to EPA’s report, 2nd hand smoking increases your risk of getting lung cancer my 25%, when the actual data shows the following:

Those exposed to second-hand smoke - 12 deaths per 1,000,000
Those not exposes to second-hand smoke - 10 deaths per 1,000,000

EPA also claims that 50,000 people die every year because of 2nd hand smoke, but according to the show this number was incorrect because 2,000 people die because of lung cancer and there’s no proof that it was second hand smoke that caused the cancer to start. Penn and Teller said that the 50,000 statistical figure came from an age bracket, where people die because of heat diseases, and all those other stuff that you hear about. We may think that this is just one study that was ruled as bogus and there are other warnings from the “Surgeon General” and what have you, but according to the show they all based their warnings on the study that EPA did in 1993.

Ok, I an not saying that you should go ahead and grab a cigarette and smoke till you get dizzy, I am just saying that I am disappointed because we were mislead much like a child who was told not to stray away from his parents because a ghost might abduct him. People who smoke aren’t babies and they should be treated like adults who can think and decide for themselves.

Citi-Rustans launch card for serious shoppers

Article from Manila Standard

ONLY serious shoppers need apply for the new credit card from Citibank and Rustan’s, the country’s luxury department store.
“The affluent market is the market we know best and it’s still growing,” said Citibank’s vice president for public relations, Aneth Ng-Lim, after launching the Citi Rustan’s Card, the bank’s second this year aimed at the rich.
The lowest credit limit is P125,000 a month for the Citi Rustan’s gold card. The platinum card, the other variant, has a credit limit in the millions—enough down payment on a Jaguar.
To encourage members to use their cards, Citibank and Rustan’s are giving the top-spending gold cardholder an all-expenses-paid vacation for two to a local destination, including economy-class airfare. The top spending platinum cardholder gets business-class airfare and accommodations for two at an Asian destination.
All cardholders get free spa treatments from Clarins Institut, Essenses Aesthetics or Murad Spa. Cardholders also get additional discounts of 15 percent to 20 percent when swiping their cards during Rustan’s anniversary sale or when shopping during the week of their birthday.
Gold cardholders get a 2-percent rebate on purchases at Rustan’s department stores and supermarkets and affiliate shops, and a 0.50-percent rebate in other establishments. Platinum cardholders earn a 3-percent rebate on purchases made in Rustan’s and its affiliate stores, and 0.50-percent on purchases in other establishments.
Cardholders also get free parking and platinum cardholders get free parking valet services. Citibank is the leading credit card issuer in the country with more than 1.2 million cardholders, representing a 21-percent market share. Citibank has more than a dozen credit card variants

Rustan's Kiddos

Check out the cute clothes for your kids at Rustan's. I chanced at this article from Inquirer and I just thought of sharing it with you guys.

Kiddie fashion sans the cartoons
By Cheche MoralPhilippine Daily Inquirer
Posted date: June 19, 2008

MANILA, Philippines—There’s no such thing as starting your kids too early in helping them find their individual style.
At least, that’s the principle behind Kiddos, Hindy Weber Tantoco’s newest baby for Rustan’s. It’s a clothing line created for children aged 2-12.
Kiddos was born out of her nine-year-old son’s need for clothing that shouldn’t “brainwash you into buying the cartoon clothes, shoes, toothbrush,” says the designer and mother of three. Her son attends a school that discourages watching TV.
“I couldn’t find clothes for my kids without cartoon characters on them,” she says. “The market is saturated [with kids’ apparel] but there’s a need [for something like Kiddos].” “We decided to create a brand for the free-spirited child, the smart kid, something for them to mix and match to suit their moods, activities and individuality. These will be clothes that don’t just follow trends, but address the child’s development.”
Kiddos is initially available in Rustan’s Tower, Makati, Gateway and Alabang Town Center.
While the first collection for girls consists of real little girls’ pieces—dresses and tees with floral patterns and nautical stripes, ballerina flats—the idea of creating clothes that would make the little ones Mini-Me versions of their mommies isn’t unlikely.
“We even see girls wearing shoes with heels. Not yet, but we’ll see,” says Tantoco.
Kiddos replaces the in-house label Jam, which is being phased out, according to Mariel Joaquin, who heads the department store’s children’s division.
Most of the items are of the same price range as Jam’s, P300 and above, but some dresses will be slightly higher-priced.
Kiddos also has special-occasion Filipiniana pieces for the little ones, barong Tagalogs and dresses made of jusi and piƱa. Monogramming will also be offered soon.
Rustan’s is also using Kiddos as a platform to teach children about care for the environment. Packaging is made of recycled materials; the clothes come in little shoeboxes that can be reused to store small toys, etc. Tantoco says they’re also looking for a regular supplier of organic cotton.

Mariel - thank you for the pictures :-)
